From AudioFile Magazine
Thanks to Ann Petry's wonderful book and Peter Francis James's splendid rendering of the times, the listener can learn a lot about what it was like to be a slave. Harriet, born in 1820, single-handedly saved many slaves by leading them North and inspired others to aid the cause. The narrator perfectly portrays Harriet's husky voice and the conversations and prayers of the slaves, beautifully breaking into song from time to time. Each character is given distinction, and James's clear and melodious voice presents facts and text in a most appealing way. Many famous historical figures, such as Frederick Douglass and John Brown, make appearances in the story. Those of all ages and interests will find much to learn from Harriet. S.G.B.
