From AudioFile Magazine

The story centers around Daniel, a young Jewish rebel with an intense hatred of the Romans. Daniel believes that Israel's only hope is for a battle that will drive the Romans away once and for all, and resists his reactions to Jesus's speeches about love and forgiveness. Pete Brad-bury's narration presents Daniel and the other characters, including Jesus, with a well-modulated and accentless presentation that highlights the emotional journey of the main character. Daniel's emotions and prejudices are the basis of this complex novel that is as powerful today as when it was awarded the Newbery medal over twenty years ago. E.J.F.
