Book Description
for Martina the Beautiful Cockroach by Carmen Agra Deedy and Michael Allen Austin
From The United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY)
Martina the cockroach is ready to marry, so her grandmother tells Martina to spill coffee on her suitors’ shoes. This will make them angry and show how they might react in the future. Martina tries the “coffee test” with a rooster, a pig, and a lizard, and all fail miserably. She is ready to give up when her grandmother encourages her to meet the tiny, brown mouse in the garden. When Martina attempts the coffee test, he turns the tables, spilling coffee on her instead. After all, he has a Cuban grandmother, too, and he knows about the coffee test. 2008 Pura Belpré Honor Book for Narrative, 2008 NCSS/CBC Notable Trade Books for Young People in the Field of Social Studies. nlh
