for On This Airplane by Lourdes Heuer and Sara Palacios
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
Focusing on a multiracial family (tan and brown-skinned) with a child and baby moving to a new home, this picture book follows them on an international flight, detailing their experience from boarding to landing while also visually tracking the journeys of other passengers. “On this airplane, there is a pilot living her dream, one passenger daydreaming and another fast asleep.” Clever text describes the sights and sounds of flight routines and dramas, while also offering hints regarding who is who on the illustrated manifest. All of the familiar discomforts of air travel are witnessed, from cramped spaces to seat backs reclined too far to turbulence, as well as moments of pleasure. “On this airplane, someone lends an earbud. Someone lends an ear. Someone makes a fuss … someone makes a friend.” (Ages 3-8)
