Book Description
for Original Cat, Copy Cat by Sarah Kurpiel
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
It’s a story we’ve seen before: A contented only-cat’s life is disrupted when a kitten is added to the household. Pineapple resents newcomer Kiwi, who is “fast … LOUD … exhausting.” To make matters worse, Kiwi follows Pineapple everywhere. Not only is Kiwi a copycat—doing absolutely everything Pineapple does—Kiwi also takes up space that was once only for Pineapple. (The look on Pineapple’s face as Kiwi snuggles against their human is pure heartbreak.) When Pineapple finally scares Kiwi away, all is well … until Pineapple starts to worry. Where did Kiwi go? Pineapple embarks on a search of the house that marks the turning point in the duo’s relationship as Pineapple discovers the delight in following, and spending time with, the newest member of the family. Fluid, well-paced writing is paired with distinctive illustrations offering a unique, quirky charm. The large, squiggly beige poof that is Pineapple and the small, sleek brown oval that is Kiwi exude a range of emotions and an abundance of personality. (Ages 3-7)
