Book Description
for Star of the Class Play by Margaret McNamara and Mike Gordon
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
This very easy beginning reader is about a little white girl who believes she is the star of her school play simply because she has the first line. Nia practices and practices her line in front of her very encouraging Mama, but on the day of the school play she gets a bout of stage fright and can’t say her line. Off-stage, her teacher shows her a breathing exercise that calms Nia down, and she is able to deliver her line (“Welcome to the class play!”) to great applause. The simplicity of the text and the clean design both add to the readability, and Mike Gordon’s cartoon-style illustrations add a lot of humor and character. (Ages 4-6)
