Book Descriptions
for Animals Speak by Lilijana Praprotnik Zupancic
From The United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY)
In this fascinating book, sounds are provided for fourteen different animals in forty-one languages so that one learns, for example, that in Estonian a pig says “RUIK” while in Swahili, it says “ROK” (n.p.). Each double spread presents a colorful, stylized representation of an animal accompanied by the English word for its sound and how that sound is written in four other lan guages. Sounds are identified in columns of forty-one national flags and ani mal noises, each headed by one of fourteen animal pictures. These columns introduce and conclude the book, since they appear on the endpapers. Lila Prap was a 2006 nominee for the Hans Christian Andersen Illustrator Award and the 2007 Astrid Lindgren Award nominee. hc
