Book Description
for First Farm in the Valley by Anne Pellowski and Roseanne Sharpe
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
Anna's childhood on a Trempealeau County Valley farm in 1876 involved special family events, seasonal celebrations and daily farm life experiences inside and outside. This episodic novel about Anna and her Polish-American, Catholic family marks the chronological beginning of the Wisconsin-born-and-raised author's books based on events from four generations of her own family. Pellowski's extensive preparatory gathering of oral histories and historical records from Wisconsin and Poland and her attention to details of human nature from a young child's perspective make her books unique. Splendid for enjoyable reading aloud as well as for studying many aspects of Wisconsin's history. Winding Valley Farm: Annie's Story was also published in 1932; it takes place a generation later in 1908. (6-11 years)
