Book Descriptions
for The Shepherd's Granddaughter by Anne Laurel Carter
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
From The United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY)
Amani’s childhood is idyllic, surrounded by an extended loving family; living on ancestral land; harvesting olives, grapes, and figs; and following her beloved grandfather with his flock of sheep. Bit by bit, Amani’s world disintegrates as Israeli settlers build roads then settlements, refuse passage to sell crops, then beat and jail her uncle. When Amani spots the father and son settlers with their rifle and binoculars, when she holds her dying sheep in her arms, and when she cannot communicate because she does not know enough English, Amani realizes her idyllic world no longer exists and she must change. The Palestinian-Israeli conflict comes alive through Amani’s eyes and adversities. 2009 USBBY Outstanding International Books List. lmp
