Book Description
for Behind the Bedroom Wall by Laura E. Williams and A. Nancy Goldstein
From The Jane Addams Children's Book Award
Korinna Rehme, a loyal, patriotic German girl, trusts that her parents and the Nazi government have her best interests at heart. But then, as social control tightens and violence against Jews escalates, Korinna's faith is shaken: Her parents who outwardly support the Fuhrer are hiding Jews in their house! Outraged, she debates turning them into the authorities, all the while knowing that, if she does this, they will be killed as traitors. Choosing to keep her family's secret, she slowly opens herself to the mother and young child who hide behind her bedroom wall-and this makes all the difference. As she inwardly questions the Nazi regime and struggles with her own deep-seated prejudices, she changes and takes action on behalf of the people she now sees as human beings.
