In 1742 young Marguerite Ledoux left France with her grandmother and uncle to seek a home in one of the French settlements in America. But a year later gentle Marguerite, now alone in the world, had become Maggie, Joel and Dolly Sargent's "bound-out girl", and was on her way with the Sargents and their five children to an isolated point of land on the northern coast of Maine where Joel had bought a claim, sight unseen.
